child's oral healthWe all know vitamins and minerals play an essential role in your child’s physical and mental development, but did you know they are also critical to your child’s oral health? Since everything in the body is connected, including teeth and gums, your child needs an adequate intake of various minerals and vitamins to develop and maintain proper oral health. With the right intake of vitamins and minerals, you’ll help keep your child’s teeth, gums, and bones strong and healthy. As your pediatric dentist, we have the nutrition facts you need to promote good oral health.

Nutrition for Your Child’s Oral Health

Vitamins and minerals are critical to your child’s proper development in all aspects of health. Even one deficiency can have a lasting impact on your child’s dental health. When children are young, their teeth and gums are still forming, making it increasingly necessary to ensure their diet is properly balanced with correct vitamins and minerals because oral health is directly linked to multiple nutrients.

Calcium

Calcium is not only essential for healthy, strong bones, but strong and healthy teeth as well. Calcium aids the development of teeth, while working to keep them strong once they’ve erupted. As calcium circulates throughout the body, the teeth and mouth will be well supplied with the calcium they need. With the right amount of calcium as a child, you’ll help reduce oral complications later in life due to weakened teeth and bones. Make sure your child eats plenty of dairy, leafy greens, and even salmon to receive plenty of calcium.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A not only provides immune support and great vision, but is needed in the body for healthy gums. Vitamin A helps promote salivary flow in the mouth to ensure the gums heal properly and stay healthy for a strong foundation for the teeth. Vitamin A is found in a variety of foods, including dark leafy greens, fish, and carrots.

Fluoride

Fluoride is known as nature’s cavity fighter because it can stop the development of cavities. Fluoride helps the development of strong healthy enamel, giving the teeth the protection they need to fight off bacteria-causing cavities. Many waters are now infused with fluoride, or you can use fluoride dental products or supplements.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D plays an important role in the development of bone and teeth because it allows the body to absorb calcium. You need vitamin D in order to benefit from calcium. Your child will get plenty of the vitamin D from sunlight, dairy products, and fish oils.

Iron

Iron is the foundation to the proper development of teeth, as well as the production of red blood cells. Iron deficiency can produce a wide range of oral and overall health complications, so make sure your child eats red meats, spinach, and beans.

Your Pediatric Dentist

Your child’s oral health not only relies on the foods they eat but the dental care they receive. As a pediatric dentist, we will help promote your child’s oral health to develop a beautiful, healthy smile to last a life time.
