4 Ways to Help a Teething Baby Sleep

If your little one’s teeth are beginning to come in, then you know that quality sleep and a teething baby do not go together. In fact, the combination is like water and oil! So, if aching gums are keeping your child up throughout the night, you might be desperately searching for effective remedies to help you both get better rest. Here are four solutions to try from a pediatric dentist!

#1. Numb Their Gums with Cold Items

While numbing creams and topical gels are not recommended by the Food and Drug Administration, you can provide your baby with similar relief by offering them cold items to chew on. Not only will it help alleviate some of the pain, but it can also relieve some of the swelling and irritation. Therefore, don’t hesitate to try using slushy applesauce, frozen fruit, or a cold washcloth!

#2. Apply Some Pressure to Their Gums

Teething rings are designed to apply pressure to your baby’s gums, which provides them with a counter sensation that feels soothing. However, by simply rubbing your finger along their gums gently, you can deliver the same feeling. Just make sure to wash your hands beforehand to prevent bacteria and germs from entering their mouth!

#3. Ask Your Pediatrician or Dentist About Over-the-Counter Medication

If none of your attempts to soothe your child are working, then talk to your pediatrician or dentist about using over-the-counter medication. The correct dose of infant acetaminophen or infant ibuprofen can safely provide your little one the relief they need to sleep soundly. However, it’s best to only use it with the approval of a medical professional.

#4. Maintain Your Bedtime Routine

Although it may not seem like it, your baby’s bedtime routine creates a better environment for self-coping. Interrupting the pattern because of their teething can mess up their slumber even more, which isn’t good for you or them. Therefore, do your best to be consistent with your nightly routine.

Whether your little one just started teething, or a few teeth have already poked through, few things are as welcomed as a restful night’s sleep. Fortunately, you can help relieve your child’s discomfort with the above tips!
